There is no place like home

As part of my degree project, I have created a graphic novel about (my own) adoption. The series is set in colour, using mainly watercolours, and is aimed at adults. The book aims to criticise and expand the image of adoption through a personal perspective. I talk about the experience of being internationally and trans-racially adopted and what it was like to grow up as an Asian in a white family in northern Sweden. The theme spans a depiction of class, race, taste and betweenship, in particular through its aesthetics.

I have worked with many hybrids of images, symbols and signs, using the idea that images are there to communicate spoken and unspoken language. Certain images will be read by some, and others, by others. I have tried to work to create images that can be read by people with different experiences, backgrounds and cultures. I want the images to take over where the written language is limited or restrictive.

There is no place like home
