My project is concerned with the notion of typography as artefact. Using museums and archives as sites for visual research, I have collected and ‘archived’ documentation of lettering on museum labelling and objects that are often overlooked by visitors when entering a museum context.
Focusing on the formal and informal labelling in display and archive, I have created a digital font that references the typewritten, monospace/monolinear letterforms used for these purposes during the early 20th century. The font has been designed to possess characteristics that imbue the ‘system-based’ font with a sense of the user behind the words (the archivist).
What becomes highlighted through this project is the making visible of quiet, everyday structures and human interventions implicit in even the smallest of artefacts within the institutional sphere of the museum.
Mitt projekt handlar om idén om typografi som en artefakt. Genom visuella efterforskningar i muséer och arkiv har jag samlat och “arkiverat” dokumentation om typografi i muséers etikettering och föremål som ofta förbises av besökare när de går in i ett musealt sammanhang.
Genom att fokusera på formell och informell etikettering i utställningar och arkiv har jag skapat ett digitalt teckensnitt som refererar till de skrivmaskinsskrivna icke-proportionella teckensnitten som användes för detta syfte i början på nittonhundratalet. Teckensnittet har utformats för att ha egenskaperna som genomsyrar “systembaserade” teckensnitt med en känsla av personen bakom orden (arkivarien).
Projektet visar upp de tysta, vardagliga strukturerna och den mänskliga påverkan som kan återfinnas i till och med de minsta artefakterna i ett museums institutionella sfär.
