SPACE SUITS – Investigating the Borderland of Body, Clothes and Interior

”A space suit is a garment worn to keep a human alive in the harsh environment of outer space.”*

Imagine this harsh environment to be the subway station of Slussen during rush hour. You are wrestling your way through the viscous dough of people in the staircase to change platforms. The only thing separating your body from other bodies are the layers of textiles in your clothes, creating a small space surrounding each body. The architecture is squeezing the mass of people to fit into the staircase. Even though you have all these protective layers on, people are coming too close.

The relationship between the body and the interior is an intimate one. The interior steps into our personal sphere, closer than we let most people. The interior architect is responsible for that relationship. I believe a way to create architecture that takes care of its inhabitants, is to use the body as a starting point, and layer by layer arrange the interior around it.

Clothes can be described as the bridge between the body and the interior. By using principles and materials from the field of clothes making, combined with the tools of interior architecture, I investigate lines between body, clothes and interior to find ways of bringing architecture closer to the body.
